Ngapipi Road Boat Sheds, Ōrākei
Commercial - Marine construction
A waterfront redevelopment of the well-known boat sheds on Ōrākei's foreshore, a project we've been working on closely with our client and one that's now well underway on site.
The project
The project is currently in its earthworks phase. We're using a barge and a 14-tonne excavator to install timber foundation piles directly into the seabed, the groundwork that everything above the waterline depends on.
Building on the water comes with variables you can't fully control. Tides dictate when parts of the work can happen, the weather sets the pace, and saltwater exposure shapes every material decision. Getting a marine build right means planning around those conditions rather than fighting them. A collaborative approach with an understanding client has kept the project moving through these complex early stages.
The first two boat sheds are programmed for completion by Labour Weekend 2026, a significant milestone on a demanding waterfront build.
The detail
As a landmark on Auckland's waterfront, the redevelopment has drawn considerable public interest and is being closely monitored by Auckland Council's Resource Consent team. The work transforms the foreshore and seabed environment while keeping the heritage and character that have made these boat sheds a recognisable part of the shoreline for generations.
The new sheds use aluminium corrugated cladding and modern engineered foundations that go well beyond the performance of the originals built more than 70 years ago. They're designed and built for the marine environment, made to hold up to the conditions while carrying on the legacy of the sheds they replace.
We're proud to have a role in delivering these sheds and contributing to how Auckland's shoreline continues to develop.
